Free online word frequency counter

This word frequency counter analyses any text and shows exactly how often each word appears, ranked from most to least common. It's a fast way to check keyword density, spot words you overuse, and get a feel for the vocabulary of an article, essay, or transcript. As you type or paste, the ranked table, totals, and percentages update instantly — nothing is ever uploaded.

How to count word frequency

  1. Type directly into the box, or paste text you've copied from elsewhere.
  2. Leave Ignore case on to count Word and word together, or turn it off to keep them separate.
  3. Enable Ignore common stop words to hide filler words like "the" and "and".
  4. Raise the Minimum word length to skip very short words.
  5. Read the ranked table, then click Copy as CSV to export the results.

Why word frequency matters

Writers and SEOs use frequency analysis to keep content focused and avoid keyword stuffing, while students and researchers use it to summarise long documents at a glance. Because the most-used words often reveal a text's main themes, a frequency list is a quick, honest snapshot of what a piece is really about.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word frequency counter work?

Paste or type your text and the tool splits it into individual words, counts how many times each one appears, and ranks them from most to least frequent. It also shows the total number of words and how many unique words there are. Everything is calculated live in your browser as you type.

What does "ignore common stop words" do?

Stop words are very common words like "the", "a", "and", "of", and "to" that usually carry little meaning on their own. Turning on this option removes them from the results so you can focus on the words that actually describe your content — useful for keyword density and content analysis.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. This word frequency counter runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded, stored, or shared, so it is safe to analyse private or confidential documents.

How are words detected?

Words are matched as sequences of letters and digits, with apostrophes allowed inside a word so contractions like "don't" and possessives like "cat's" stay intact. Surrounding punctuation is stripped, and by default "Word" and "word" are counted together.

Can I export the results?

Yes. Click "Copy as CSV" to copy every counted word and its frequency as comma-separated "word, count" rows. You can paste that straight into Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet for further analysis.
