How the tip is worked out

The tip is simply the bill multiplied by your chosen percentage: a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $10, for a $60 total. Divide by the number of people and you get each person's share. The tip is rounded to cents before splitting; any remaining cents are assigned using the payment breakdown below the results. How much should I tip?

In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service at a restaurant, with 20% or more for excellent service. Many people round up to a whole dollar amount. Tipping norms vary by country and situation, so use the quick-pick buttons as a starting point and adjust the custom percentage to whatever feels right.

Is the tip calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

This calculator applies your chosen percentage to whatever bill amount you enter. Traditionally tips are figured on the pre-tax subtotal, so if you want to tip on that amount, enter the subtotal rather than the tax-included total. Either way, the math is the same — bill multiplied by the tip percentage.

How do I split the bill between people?

Enter a whole number of people. The tip is rounded once to the nearest cent, then the total is split into amounts that differ by at most one cent. When an equal split is not possible, a note shows how many people pay each amount so the payments add up exactly.

What currency does the calculator use?

Amounts are shown with a US dollar symbol for illustration, but the math is currency-neutral. Whatever currency your bill is in, just read the figures as that currency — the tip, total, and per-person amounts are all calculated the same way.
