Free online tip calculator

This tip calculator works out the gratuity and the total for any bill in an instant, and splits it fairly between any number of people. Enter your bill amount, pick a tip percentage — 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25% — or type your own, then set how many people are sharing. The tip, grand total, and each person's share update live as you type, so there is no math to do at the table.

How to calculate a tip

  1. Enter the bill amount (use the pre-tax subtotal if you prefer to tip on that).
  2. Tap a quick-pick percentage or type a custom %.
  3. Set the number of people splitting the bill.
  4. Read the tip, total, and per-person amounts, then tap Copy summary.

How the tip is worked out

The tip is simply the bill multiplied by your chosen percentage: a 20% tip on a $50 bill is $10, for a $60 total. Divide by the number of people and you get each person's share. It's the same percentage math behind a discount calculator, just added on instead of taken off. To explore percentages on their own, try the percentage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

In the United States, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for table service at a restaurant, with 20% or more for excellent service. Many people round up to a whole dollar amount. Tipping norms vary by country and situation, so use the quick-pick buttons as a starting point and adjust the custom percentage to whatever feels right.

Is the tip calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax total?

This calculator applies your chosen percentage to whatever bill amount you enter. Traditionally tips are figured on the pre-tax subtotal, so if you want to tip on that amount, enter the subtotal rather than the tax-included total. Either way, the math is the same — bill multiplied by the tip percentage.

How do I split the bill between people?

Enter the number of people sharing the bill and the calculator divides the tip and the grand total evenly. The "Tip per person" and "Total per person" cards show exactly how much each person owes, which makes settling up at the end of a meal quick and fair.

What currency does the calculator use?

Amounts are shown with a US dollar symbol for illustration, but the math is currency-neutral. Whatever currency your bill is in, just read the figures as that currency — the tip, total, and per-person amounts are all calculated the same way.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. This tip calculator runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. The bill amount, tip percentage, and number of people you enter are never uploaded or stored, so it is completely private to use.
