Free online sales tax calculator
This sales tax calculator works both ways. In Add tax mode you enter a net price and a tax rate to see the tax amount and the gross total. In Remove tax mode you start from a price that already includes tax and work backwards to the original net price and the tax hidden inside it. It doubles as a VAT or GST calculator — just type in your local rate. Every figure updates live as you type, and everything runs privately in your browser.
How to calculate sales tax
- Choose Add tax to add tax on, or Remove tax to strip it out.
- Enter the price — the net amount when adding, or the gross total when removing.
- Enter the tax rate as a percentage, such as 8 or 20.
- Read the tax amount and the other price instantly in the result cards.
- Click Copy summary to save the full breakdown to your clipboard.
Add tax vs. remove tax
Adding tax multiplies the net price by the rate and adds it on: tax = net × rate ÷ 100. Removing tax reverses that by dividing the gross total by 1 + rate ÷ 100, which is why you cannot simply subtract the same percentage. The reverse calculation is handy for receipts, invoices, and expense claims where only the tax-inclusive total is shown.
