Average Calculator

Find mean, median, mode and range.

Separate numbers with commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines. Use a decimal point; commas separate values, not thousands. Up to 10,000 numbers.

Free online average calculator

This average calculator finds the mean of a list of numbers in an instant — and gives you the full picture with the median, mode, range, sum, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation too. Just type or paste your values separated by commas, spaces, or new lines and every statistic updates live as you go. Negatives, decimals and scientific notation are welcome. Invalid entries are identified before calculation, so accidental text cannot silently change your results.

How to calculate an average

  1. Type your numbers into the box, or paste them from anywhere.
  2. Separate values with commas, spaces, or line breaks — mix them freely. A comma separates values; use a point for decimals.
  3. Read the mean and the other statistics as they update instantly.
  4. Click Load example to try a data set, Copy results to grab the summary, or Clear to start over.

Understanding the statistics

The mean is the classic average: the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value once your numbers are sorted, which is less affected by outliers. The mode is the most frequent value — and there can be more than one, or none at all. The range is the gap between the largest and smallest values, while standard deviation tells you how spread out the numbers are, with separate population (σ) and sample (s) figures.

Private, accurate, and free

Every calculation runs locally in your browser, so your data never leaves your device. Results use floating-point arithmetic and are rounded for display, generally to 15 significant digits. Statistics beyond the representable range are labelled explicitly. Need to work with percentages instead? Frequently asked questions

How do I use the average calculator?

Type or paste your numbers into the box, separated by commas, spaces, or new lines. The calculator checks each complete value — including negatives, decimals and scientific notation — and instantly shows the count, sum, mean, median, mode, range, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation. Invalid entries are identified so they cannot silently change your data set.

What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?

The mean is the arithmetic average — the sum divided by how many numbers there are. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted (or the average of the two middle values). The mode is the value that appears most often. Together they describe the centre of your data in different ways.

What is the difference between population and sample standard deviation?

Both measure how spread out your numbers are. Population standard deviation (σ) divides by the number of values and is used when your data is the entire group. Sample standard deviation (s) divides by one less than the count (n − 1) and is used when your numbers are a sample drawn from a larger population, so it needs at least two values.

How is the mode shown when there are ties or no repeats?

If every number appears exactly once there is no mode, so the calculator shows "none". If two or more values are tied for the most frequent, it lists all of them, so a data set can have several modes.

How are very large and small numbers displayed?

Small and large results use scientific notation so they are not mistaken for zero. Calculations use browser floating-point arithmetic and results are rounded for display. If an individual statistic cannot be represented, it is labelled Out of range while the other results remain available. Use at most 10,000 numbers per calculation.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your numbers are never uploaded, stored, or shared, so it is safe to use for private or sensitive data. There is no sign-up. Each calculation supports up to 10,000 numbers.
